Offsite Backup

Existing NGE Offsite Backup users can login to the web interface here.

Our 24/7 emergency mobile number is 0488 BACKUP (or 0488 222 587).

NGE provides a secure offsite backup system that offers businesses of all sizes an effective, affordable, automated regular offsite backup through the Internet.

The premise is very simple. We provide clients with a small application to run on the machine(s) to be backed up which is used to configure backups and restore files.

The backup process is automated, and includes the following steps:
  1. Client-side application figures out what files have changed in the past 24 hours
  2. Only the changes are encrypted and compressed to prepare for sending
  3. These compressed, secured changes are sent to the NGE offsite backup servers and stored
It is important to note, that only the changes are sent. So if you have two years of e-mail in your Inbox, only the messages you received today are sent!

Restoring is a very simple process as well.

Is my data secure?

Yes. All the data is encrypted locally (ie. on your computer) before being sent to NGE. It cannot be decrypted without the unique passkey which only you know!

Are the servers secure?

Yes. The servers are stored in a co-location facility in Brisbane that is staffed 24/7 and features swipe card protected access, video surveillance etc. It also has VESDA early warning fire detection and suppression systems, as well as ample backup aircon and power.

Is the service fast?

Unlike some providers, hosting for NGE's Australian customers is done locally. We do not use overseas servers except for redundancy and backup purposes. The data centre itself has fibre optic links that provide very fast uplinks to all major Australian ISPs.

Won't it take me weeks to do my initial upload?

No. When you first sign up, we'll send you an external hard drive to do your initial backup to. Simply return this hard drive, at our expense, and we will "seed" the backup server with your initial data. Note that the data on the hard drive is encrypted, and cannot be decrypted by anyone but you!

Won't it take me weeks to download a full restore in the event of a disaster?

No. Whilst you can use the application to do day-to-day file restores where necessary, if you need to transfer large volumes of data we will send you a copy of your backup. A small service fee applies for this service.

Do you keep a history of my files, or only the most recent version?

Updated and deleted files are kept according to a retention policy. Depending on the amount of data you wish to devote to this, you can restore files from varying points in time.

Is this only for big businesses?

On the contrary. This is an ideal solution for small and home based businesses that might not have much in the way of a backup strategy. It is very simple, and quite affordable when compared to the cost of data loss.

Do I need ADSL?

You need some form of high-speed Internet access. This may include ADSL, wireless, ADSL, or cable. Dial-up does not offer sufficient bandwidth.

Will this increase my bandwidth usage?

Yes. Like all traffic that goes through your Internet connection, your backup traffic counts towards your ISP's bandwidth usage. Only the file changes are replicated, which means the amount of traffic depends on how many changes you make on a daily basis.

Can I backup Macintosh and Linux computers?

Yes. The client is multi-platform. OSX version 10.2 and higher is supported. Linux kernel 2.2 and higher (along with many UNIX operating systems) is supported. Telephone support for these agents may come at an additional charge, should you require assistance.

Can I backup Windows Vista?

Yes, Vista is supported.

Can I backup SQL Server, Exchange, etc?

Yes. There are several agents included:
  • Exchange 2000/2003/2007
  • SQL Server 7.0/2000/2005
  • Domino/Lotus Notes 5.0 or above
  • Oracle 8i or above
  • MySQL 3.2.4 or above
Telephone support for these agents may come at an additional charge, should you require assistance.

What happens if I lose my passkey?

By definition, your data cannot be decrypted without the passkey. You must ensure you safeguard this key both from others and from loss.
